Miwa Kyuwa
(Kyusetsu X)

三輪 休和(十代休雪)
(1895-1981)

Miwa Kyuwa revitalised modern Hagi ware, and was instrumental in its unprecedented growth. Born Habahiro, Miwa took the name Kyūsetsu in 1927, succeeding the tenth head of the Miwa family, a lineage known for its exquisite tea pottery. The Miwa family, part of Japan’s official kilns, is highly regarded for blending Korean pottery techniques with Japanese traditions. This heritage dates back to the early 17th century when Korean potters were brought to Japan by Mori Terumoto to establish pottery in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Miwa's dedication to the craft has left an enduring legacy in the world of Japanese ceramics. In 1970, he was designated a Living National Treasure and Important Intangible Cultural Property.
